Great Question – and it has a really simple answer.
Petrol is pumped in to the engine from the tank.
Then in what is called the 4 stroke cycle –
      1 – Intake – suck fuel in.
2 – Compression – squeeze it really hard.
3 – Power – at the end of the squeeze you add a spark, the fuel burns and pushes the piston downwards.
4 – Exhaust – the fumes from the burnt fuel leave the engine.
