Aside from renewable energy supplies (wind, solar, wave) all electricity plants work the same way. First you burn fuel (oil, gas, coal or peat, nuclear power plants are bit different) to heat water up and turn it into steam. The steam pushes turbines (think of how a fan works, it spins and moves air, a turbine works the exact opposite, the air moves and spins the turbine) the turbines spin a generator which makes electricity. A generator is at its basic level a loop of wire moving inside a magnet. Once moving electricity flows out the wire to your house.
